Our mission is to provide food for hungry children of Horry County who through no fault of their own do not have enough to eat on a daily basis. Our motto is “HUNGER doesn’t take the weekend off, neither does our 100% volunteer staff.”
After the devastation of Hurricane Hugo in 1989, our founder Barbara Mains and two friends saw the depth of local poverty… trailer parks with dirt floors, kids without shoes, families barely getting by. What started as a small act of kindness grew into Help 4 Kids, built on the belief that no effort for a child is ever wasted.
More than 30 years later, we’re still a 100% volunteer-run organization feeding, clothing, and supporting children across Horry County. Through Help 4 Kids and Backpack Buddies, we reach thousands each week, many of whom count on us as their only source of food outside of school. When kids have what they need, they’re free to learn, grow, and simply be kids.
Barb Mains, founder of Help 4 Kids, has dedicated over three decades to fighting hunger and supporting vulnerable children in Horry County, South Carolina. Inspired by the devastation of Hurricane Hugo in 1989, she and two friends discovered the extent of local poverty and hunger, sparking the creation of this 100% volunteer organization. Help 4 Kids now serves around 3,000 children weekly, providing food, clothing, and school supplies. Mains remains passionately involved, ensuring every donation directly benefits the children her organization serves.
